... cargill’s drive to secure a good quality and sustainable supply of cocoa beans is filtering down to famers in cote d'ivoire as it has just made premium payments totalling more than us $2 ... the cash boost is the second of its annual sustainable certified cocoa premiums that are being made to 26,500 farmers across 21 cooperatives in cote d'ivoire ... it was made for the delivery of 20,000 tonnes of utz certified and rainforest alliance cocoa between october 2010 and may 2011 ... 2m figure was not the amount paid for the cocoa, which was not divulged, but an additional amount on top of that – more than 50 per cent of which goes directly to farmers ... harold poelma, managing director cocoa, cargill cocoa & chocolate, said: “the premiums are a clear indication that farmers are adopting more sustainable practices and that the availability of sustainable beans, and cocoa products, for our customers continues to grow ... “these premiums recognise the hard work undertaken by farmers and prove our commitment to sustainable cocoa production and improving incomes for farmers ... ” he added that cargill would continue to work closely with the farmer in order to reach its target of 100,000 tonnes of certified sustainable cocoa beans from cote d'ivoire by 2015 ... as the consumer movement for sustainable and fair trade-type products gains momentum, chocolate and cocoa suppliers are increasingly called on by customers for clarity in the supply chain

... a new minimum price for fairtrade organic cocoa, which comes into force early next year, will act as an income safety net for growers amid ongoing price volatility in the sector, according to the organization behind the standard ... as of 1 january 2011, certified farmers are assured a minimum price of us$2300/metric tonne for their organic cocoa sold on fairtrade terms, or the market price if higher, said the fairtrade labelling organizations international (flo) ... and organic cocoa growers will earn an additional us$200 in fairtrade premium to invest in business and community projects for every metric tonne (mt) of cocoa they sell, up from us$150/mt, added the flo ... “the fairtrade standards require that buyers pay cocoa farmers’ organizations at least the current market price ... in the current cocoa market the market price is relatively high ... with such a system in place, farmers are thus protected to earn at least a certain income off their cocoa crops, maintains the flo, adding that the fairtrade minimum price is higher for organic than non-organic cocoa to take into account higher production costs for organic production ... in october, the flo announced that it was raising the minimum price for conventional fairtrade cocoa to us$2000/mt at fob level, also effective from the start of the new year ... there are currently fairtrade cocoa producer organizations that are organic certified in the caribbean, central and south america including the dominican republic, belize, honduras, colombia, peru, ecuador and bolivia ... and the flo told this publication that fairtrade has been an important tool for cocoa farmers in latin america to convert to organic production ... “most cocoa producer organizations in latin america are now certified organic ... ” there are also two fairtrade and organic certified cocoa organizations in the ivory coast but in their case, said the flo, they had organic certification first and then sought the fairtrade backing

... ngos and human rights groups have accused hershey of sourcing cocoa from african farms that use forced and child labour in wide-ranging criticism of the us chocolate giant's record on corporate and social responsibility ... a report from global exchange, green america, the international labor rights forum (ilrf) and oasis usa said yesterday (13 september) that hershey had not ensured its cocoa supplies from west africa were not from areas "tainted" by labour rights abuses ... the report also accused hershey of "a lack of transparency" in identifying its cocoa suppliers and claimed that the company had "no third-party certification" ... hershey, the report argued, "lags behind its competitors" when it comes to purchasing cocoa certified to meet certain labour, social, and environmental standards ... the pressure groups also pointed to the presence of one fair trade certified product in hershey's portfolio - the dagoba line the company acquired in 2006 ... the hershey's kisses and reese's maker needed to "take immediate action" to eliminate labour practices that violated international human rights on forced, child and trafficked labour by tracing its supply chain back to cocoa farms and source from farmers who can prove they do not use forced and child labour ... "hershey can and must do its part to end human trafficking on cocoa farms in west africa ... " the report, timed to coincide with the publication of hershey's first corporate and social responsibility report, also called on the company to take use 100% fair trade certified cocoa beans for one of its five top-selling chocolate bars by 2012 - and to commit that the "majority" of cocoa across its products will be certified fair trade certified by 2022 ...
